功能：

RNA-binding component of the mitochondrial small ribosomal subunit (mt-SSU) that plays a role in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Stimulates mitochondrial mRNA translation of subunit components of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Binds to the mitochondrial 12S rRNA (12S mt-rRNA) and tRNA(Glu). Involved also in positive regulation of cell proliferation and tumor cell growth.

1. we verified for the first time that mitochondrial ribosomal protein S23 expression was upregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma. High mitochondrial ribosomal protein S23 levels can predict poor clinical outcomes in hepatocellular carcinoma, and this protein plays a key role in tumor proliferation. Therefore, mitochondrial ribosomal protein S23 may be a potential therapeutic target for hepatocellular carcinoma. PMID: 28714366
